Percentages and price checks

Choose the right percentage and pricing calculator

A percentage amount, a discount, a profit margin and a unit price use different bases. This guide helps you choose the focused calculator and verify the arithmetic without changing any existing product URL.

Start with the question

Match the price question to the calculator

Name the result you need before entering numbers. That prevents a percentage of cost from being mistaken for a percentage of selling price.

What is X% of Y, or how much did it change?

Use PercentCalc for a percentage amount, one number as a percentage of another, percentage change or a reverse-percentage check.

What will I pay after a discount?

Use DiscountCalc for amount saved, final sale price, fixed coupons, stacked discounts or the original price before a reduction.

What are the margin, markup or target price?

Use MarginCalc when cost and selling price are involved. It keeps margin on revenue separate from markup on cost.

Which package costs less per unit?

Use UnitPrice to normalize package price and quantity into the same unit before comparing sizes or multipacks.

Four worked checks

Use the correct base for each calculation

These compact examples make the denominator and final check visible.

15% of 240 = 36
Convert 15% to 0.15, then multiply 240 × 0.15. Check: 36 ÷ 240 = 15%.
20% off 80 = 64 final
The saving is 80 × 0.20 = 16, so the final price is 80 − 16 = 64.
Cost 60, price 100
Profit is 40. Margin is 40 ÷ 100 = 40%; markup is 40 ÷ 60 = 66.67%. They are not interchangeable.
750 g for 3 vs 1 kg for 3.80
The normalized prices are 4.00 per kg and 3.80 per kg. Compare only after converting quantities to the same unit.

Common questions

Percentage and pricing calculation basics

Why does the base number matter in a percentage calculation?

A percentage is a fraction of a chosen whole. Forty is 40% of 100 but 66.67% of 60, so the same difference can produce different rates when the base changes.

Do two successive discounts add together?

Usually not. A 20% discount followed by 10% applies the second reduction to the already reduced price, giving a combined 28% reduction, not 30%.

Are margin and markup the same?

No. Margin divides profit by selling price; markup divides profit by cost. With cost 60 and price 100, margin is 40% and markup is 66.67%.

Is the lowest unit price always the best choice?

It is only a like-for-like price comparison. Quality, usable quantity, expiry, fees, taxes and personal or business constraints still need separate verification.
